Wow, things have sure changed in the field of HR. Not only did Human Resources go through a
monumental shift in managing and sustained an instant remote workforce in 2020 but the field of
HR is increasingly growing in remote opportunities as well as strategic leadership.
The remote scene for Human Resources spans multiple roles and Kara Deschenes has led them
all including Total Rewards and Benefits, Compensation Design, Talent Acquisition, Training and
Development, HR Legal Compliance, People and Culture, and Organizational Change
Management (OCM).
In this episode we hear from Kara Deschenes and her journey from in-person to remote HR
careers which required a large shift in industry.
Like many professionals shifting from in-person to remote, there are challenges. In Kara’s case the
primary challenge was that her HR experience was wide and deep but in industries that are not
traditionally remote. The hiring managers are sometimes challenged in believing industry is more,
or just as important, as skill.

With the right presentation and narrative, Kara was able to overcome the stigma of in-person
industry to go fully remote in HR Leadership.
At the same time, she discusses how much more she can get done by taking back her time from
long commutes and easy access to small talk while still building engagement and togetherness with
her remote team.
